Spontaneous yet timeless, the photographs in this collection transport us to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, a place where time slows, the land prevails, and tradition exerts an indomitable presence. In this project, I sought to capture images of Amish life free from the sentimental conventions so often encountered in depictions of “Pennsylvania Dutch” country. Out of respect for the community’s privacy, advance warning was given of our arrival. As a result, everyone we met knew who we were and I was able to achieve these small but illuminating windows into their world.
