Attorneys Carina Uraiqat and Meghan Kelly preparting to run near Inlet View Elementary School, Anchorage. (© Clark James Mishler)

6:45 PM, Wednesday, March 25, 2015.  “…I had a difficult time with your instruction to not smile.  So I was simply determined not to smile. Looking into the camera, as opposed to up or away made it even harder, so I was even more determined.  It reminded me of some hippie partner yoga classes I’ve taken where you are instructed to stare into a fellow student’s eyes and not talk, laugh, smile, look away, or make faces, just see.  I think you were supposed to feel and receive deep compassion after several minutes.  I remember being determined to do the assignment correctly–to get the deep compassion!–but it was hard to relax into.  But as for why determination takes over, instead of just being, yes, I think it is a personality trait; I bet my folks would tell you I’ve had it for a long long time.”  -Attorney Carina Uraiqat (left) with friend and fellow attorney, Meghan Kelly, near Inlet View Elementary School prior to a run the Coastal Trail in Anchorage.
