6 PM, July 28, 2011. Seven month old, Georgianna Joseph, takes a table-top nap during the West End Block Party, on Fourth Avenue in downtown Anchorage. With the live music, dancing, eating and general crazy atmosphere at this annual event, it was this single image that seemed to sum it up best. (I have heard that few are interested in the technical information of my images so, I will discontinue this practice. Technical questions are welcome, however, and I will attempt to answer them.)

11 AM, July 21, 2011. While on assignment at Steelfab near Ship Creek in Anchorage, I was walking across the yard and saw a strange bird approach. I wasn’t sure what kind of bird it was, but I could tell it had something in its talons. I quickly raised my 70-200 mm lens on my Canon 7D and fired off 4 exposures, this was the final image. It wasn’t until I zoomed into the image on the back of the camera, however, that I discovered that the Osprey had a Dolly Varden in its clutches. The whole event happened in less than 5 seconds. There’s an old photographic proverb, “Be there at f8”. Yes, be there, and be prepared!
The great taloned osprey
nests in Scotland.
Her nest’s the biggest
thing around, a spiked basket
with hungry ugly osprey offspring
in it. For months she sits on it.
He fishes, riding four-pound salmon
home like rockets. They get
all the way there before they die,
so muscular and brilliant
swimming through the sky.

The marriage of Oscar and Laura was where the great Alaskan wedding blended with the colors and exuberance of Colombia on a warm afternoon at Cooper Landing overlooking the Kenai River. I approached this event with total freedom, using my perspective control lenses and limited focus to create a dreamlike quality to the day’s festivities. It was my hope to create an impression of the day for those in attendance. I hope you enjoy the images. -Clark
